Looking for ways to support abortion providers post-election? Here are five options.
If you personally know anyone involved in abortion work, you know that since the election, the community has been busy. We are, publicly and privately, organizing. We are, individually, choosing the levels to which our public and private lives will continue to overlap with this work as they did before November 8th. We are tapping into the historical work and taking notes for what is to come next. We are doing everything we can to keep people who seek abortion able to do so safely. We are ensuring providers are appropriately trained. We are working to mobilize ourselves and anyone who seeks to support this work.Thank you, to everyone who has reached out post-election to ask how to help. Providers, students, funders, friends, family. Thank you. Thank you for asking how to help. Now, to answer your questions of how to help, here are five options:
- Donate! Tomorrow is #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving. Here's are two organizations where I dedicate my time and effort by serving on the Boards of Directors, and encourage your donation:
- Nursing Students for Sexual and Reproductive Health (NSSRH), formerly Nursing Students for Choice (NSFC), a national non-profit organization dedicated to advancing and securing reproductive health and justice for all. Your donation directly supports nursing students' education in sexual and reproductive health care, attendance to national conferences on contraception and abortion care, and outreach to geographic areas with the least access to this content. NSSRH supports nursing students to become leaders, policy makers, patient advocates, and educators. Make your donation here.
- $25 provides supplies for making our signature activist buttons
- $50 helps finance one campus activity, film, or speaker
- $100 funds outreach efforts to states with limited access to sexual & reproductive health care
- $150 sends one student to a national conference
- $250 covers supplies for 5 schools participation in the Abortion Care Education (ACE) Project
- $500 helps maintain our Clinical Externship Program (CEP)
- $750 sends 5 students to a national conference
- $1000 brings 2 speakers to our annual activist conference
- The Midwest Access Project (MAP) envisions a society in which integrated, comprehensive reproductive healthcare is fully accessible to all. We exist to increase the provision of full-spectrum reproductive healthcare in the region, without barriers to access, through education and training of healthcare providers and the public. - Become a clinic escort: Volunteer your time, in the mornings, evenings, weekends. Walk people across lines of angry speech and horrifically incorrect signage. Tell patients you are there for them. Let providers know that their patients will make it inside safely so they can focus on their clinical work. Let clinic staff know that there is a community outside as vocal for their as there is against them.
- Know the Symptoms to Watch For After An Abortion: Heavy bleeding. Pain. Fever. Signs of continued pregnancy. Also, know a provider who is pro-abortion so that you can consult for a friend, family member, or yourself if you can't reach the abortion provider with questions. Also, if (or when) abortion goes underground again, these are good people to know ahead of time.
- Support abortion doulas (or become one!): Did you know that there were doulas for abortion work? There are! Here are the groups in Chicago and New York and Seattle and DC and San Francisco (and many other cities).
- Be "out" as supportive of abortion. Get to know yourself and how you want to be involved: on the front lines, on social media, in writing, in advocacy work, by telling your friends over dinner "I support abortion and I need to know who else around this table does, too." Find ways to let your family and friends know where you stand related to reproductive rights and access. We are going to need as many people as we can get. Join us.
